best exercise regimes

What is the best system of exercise for me to follow at the gym?
I decided to start taking advantage of the room gym at my university, but I've never been to a gym before. I do not know where the material to be used or for how long. The ultimate goal is becoming stronger and more general tonic, plus possibly lose 5 to 10 pounds. Can anyone tell me the best plan for achieving this using equipment at the gym?
Make sure you are consistent, at least 30 minutes of cardio a day and avoid injury. See if they provide trainers or a training program for you while you're there.
