parts cheap exercise equipment?

I am a student of the University and I find it very difficult to be able to pay a gym membership. I was wondering if there are small pieces of equipment for the work you can purchase for doing an exercise at home. I know that Wal-Mart sells things that is pretty cheap, like exercise balls, etc., but is it useful? Any suggestions would be helpful to all.

exercise balls are fun, and you can combine with many other things, even use as a seat (you can get a ring that prevents them from rolling around. Add a few dumbbells, they should not be too heavy, especially if you use the ball at the same time. And finally, get resistance bands and a yoga mat. Who selection, just to cover almost everything a multigym expensive can, without anywhere near the cost or space, and used with the imagination of its more fun too!
