Educate, motivate and empower children to become savers and investors regularly ultimately encourage them to financial independence and intelligent financial decisions later in life. T
o help you educate your children about personal finances, here are 13 tips for managing money.
Money Management Tips for Kids
1). Talk to your children about your values regarding currency.
Teach them how to save, how to grow, how to spend it wisely and how to avoid the temptations of credit cards or excessive, reckless spending.
2). Help your children learn the differences between needs, desires and wishes.
This should prepare them to make good spending decisions later in life. You can help in differentiating between things they need (new shoes for example), they want (a CD of new music) and what they want and would need to save for (a new bicycle or a cell phone).
3). Teach them to set goals.
Whether save to the movies once a week or saving for an iPod, your goals will help children learn about the value of money and how to become leaders in their pocket.
4). Introduce your children the importance of savings over expenditure.
To demonstrate the concept of earning interest income, you might consider paying "interest" money register your children at home. This will help maintaining a savings plan until later in life.
Pocket money and spending decisions
Receives an allowance to give your children a sense of autonomy and power spending. However, simply handing over money every week does not teach them about the value of money.
5). Giving pocket money in denominations that encourage savings.
If they get R20 a week, give them four pieces and R5 encouraged to set aside at least R5 to plan their savings.
6). Take your child to the bank to open their own savings account.
Encourage regular savings habits early is key to a successful offering. Remember that you usually need to accompany them to open their account savings if they are under 18 years.
7). Allow them to make spending decisions.
Refusing to allow your children to withdraw and spend their own money could discourage savings. Rather encourage them to research before making major purchases and wait for the right time to buy (such as balances end of season). Have a discussion on the advantages and disadvantages of savings or spend their hard earned money before leaving for the shops.
8). Keep records of money saved, invested or spent.
To encourage an element of financial control using 12 small envelopes - one for each months of the year - and encourage your children to place receipts for all purchases in the envelopes. This could be useful to explain the concept of the budget as they will be able to see the periodic expenditures and ad hoc throughout the year.
9). Teach your children the value of money when you shop.
Going to the supermarket is often the experience of spending a first child and exit can be used to demonstrate the planning and budgeting. In writing a shopping list of the week, you can teach them to avoid buying impulsive and making price comparisons you show them how to check the value and quality.
10). Prime time investors.
To help demonstrate how the stock market, you may be some actions that you have your children and monitor the market activity of the business together. This exercise would work best with brands that kids can relate to like their local supermarket chain, mobile service provider or favorite brand of clothing. As they grow, you can help your children choose to buy shares with their own money.
The ins and outs of Money Management
11). Explain the dangers of borrowing and paying interest. Charging interest on small loans you make to your children, will illustrate the concept of interest.
1 2). Demonstrate recognizing expenses.
When you use your debit or credit card at the supermarket or restaurant, show them to verify the charges and how to calculate a tip.
13). Encourage discussion of family financial scheduled.
Whether a time for children to record only their economies or a discussion with your teen about developments in the national and global economies, improving their understanding of finance will be useful to become more confident with money and, finally, to establish their financial independence.
