The coefficient of friction between a belt of 23 kg and Exercise gym floor are u (static) = 0.43 and u (kinetic) = 0.36 (the "u" is the coefficient of friction). a) Determine the magnitude of the minimum horizontal force needed to start the 7, 53 Newtons conveyor belt. [final answer was given to 97 newtons] *** I'm really not sure what to do here and is 7.53 Newtons confusing me ... I do not know what it is. b) Once the belt is moving, what the magnitude of the horizontal force will move at constant speed? [final answer was given to 81 newtons] 2. A pizza box thrown across the room hits the ground with a horizontal speed of 2 m / s. If box of 300 grams meets a floor with a coefficient of kinetic friction of 0.3, what will the box slide before coming to rest? *** I I tried and tried ... I'm afraid I agree with A you, as far as question 1 is concerned. The answers have been given no sense to me either. For Question 2, however, acceleration adverse due to friction is UXG = 0.3 x 9.8 ^ 2 =- 2.94m. Using v ^ 2 = u ^ 2 +2 xaxs (where S is the distance before stopping, a is acceleration and v = final velocity = 0) 0 = 2 2 + 2 x (-2.94) XS to rearrange ss = 4/5.88 = 0.68m = 68cm
