Protect your pet this winter

As time begins to grow cold PDSA encourages pet owners to protect their four-legged friends against the dangers of body hypothermia (low temperature) this winter.

Hypothermia is caused by exposure cold and can occur after a few minutes in freezing temperatures.

Cold weather can cause the animal body temperature to drop. This can lead hypothermia, which in severe cases can be fatal. The first sign that the animal is cold, it's when they shiver, but stop if their temperature drops dangerously low. They may become confused and submissive, with ears and feet cold. Their heart rate and breathing may also become slow or irregular.

Among dogs, hypothermia is more often observed in a small, old or sick. Breeds with low body fat or thin films, such as whippets and greyhounds, are more sensitive. Puppies and kittens are especially vulnerable because they have difficulty controlling the temperature of their body and should always be kept indoors in cold weather.

PDSA Senior Veterinary Surgeon, Sean Wensley, said: "The first thing you should do if you suspect that your pet is suffering from hypothermia or frostbite is to make sure they are dry. Then gradually raise their body temperature by placing them near a well-covered hot water bottle or use a hair dryer, on low heat. It is very important to call or visit your vet for advice. "

Prevention is the key to stopping hypothermia. Here are some tips from PDSA:
Do:
· Bring pets inside during cold weather
Keep dogs · leash to prevent accidents and injuries caused by snow and ice
· Beware of banks and icy slopes leading to water and frozen ponds - dogs can easily fall
· Dogs vulnerable dress coats for dogs appropriate when walking to protect from the cold
· Clean and dry the feet of your pet after a walk outside in the cold
• Ask your dog groomer cutting the hair between the toes to prevent snow and imprisonment, developing ice ball

Do not:
• Leave pets outside for any length of time without access to housing and heat
* Allowing dogs to rest on frozen soil (which can lead to frostbite)
• Leave pets outside after exercise
Take · dogs for long walks outside when it's cold and wet
• Leave pets alone in a car, caravan or conservatory - Hypothermia can set in very quickly!

Diagnosis, Prevention and Treatment of Exercise-Related Asthma, Respiratory and Allergic Disorders in Sports $80 Asthma and allergy represent increasing problems for the actively competing athlete. The prevalence of exercise-induced asthma (EIA) has increased over the last two decades, especially amongst elite endurance athletes; it has been reported that high-level endurance training in particular may increase bronchial hyperresponsiveness (BHR) and cause inflammation in the airways. Intensive endurance training and competition, together with environmental influences, are thought to be causative factors. For winter sports, inhaled cold air represents such an environmental factor; moreover, exposure of competing swimmers to organic chlorine products released from indoor swimming pools is another example of a harsh environment. Furthermore, the increased amount of training and increased level of physical fitness and maximum oxygen uptake reached by present-day elite athletes may, in some cases, make it difficult to discriminate between limitations to maximum exercise set by normal airways and EIA. This underlines the need for developing good diagnostic criteria for EIA and BHR in relation to sports.
