How effective is exercise bikes?

I toying with the idea of buying myself an exercise bike. My sister has one, said she burns about 1,000 calories per day. I'm leaning more towards a recumbent bike, preferably ProForm SR30. I included a session in the morning and one after work, plus a bunch of different ways of tightening things top it off. Of course, my real problem is to stay motivated, which is always the hardest part for me.

They are very effective for two or three weeks as people actually use them. Then they sit unused, day after day in the den or rec-room, silently you making fun of their presence.
