Exercise for Your Muscle Type $9.99 Most exercise books offer a generic, one-size-fits-all approach to fitness, with the same workouts for everyone. Unfortunately, not everyone is alike. Each body possesses a unique combination of muscle fibers, and understanding one’s muscle makeup can have a huge impact on the success of an exercise program—a fact that, until now, has been largely ignored. The body has both fast-twitch and slow-twitch muscle fibers. Fast-twitch fibers are responsible for explosive, powerful movements—jumping, weight lifting, and so on. Slow-twitch fibers are used during endurance activities, such as walking and running. Exercise is more effective if it is based on an individual’s personal combination of muscle fibers. This book is useful for athletes, “weekend warriors,“ and those just starting an exercise program. Whether a reader is predominantly slow twitch, fast twitch, or a balance of the two, he or she will find the right exerciseprogram for his or her body type. With Exercise for Your Muscle Type, readers can: Use muscle makeup to achieve greater athletic success. Tailor workouts to address particular strengths and weaknesses. Follow detailed exercise plans provided for each muscle type. Discover new sports and activities that more closely fit a specific body type. People are often dissatisfied with the success of their exercise programs or activities, but they may simply have been the wrong programs for their muscular structure. Exercise for Your Muscle Type eliminates this frustration by showing readers how they are built and by helping them put together an appropriate personalized comprehensive exercise program. With a better understanding of one’s own body, anyone can achieve his or her fitness goals more quickly! |

Exercise-induced Acute Renal Failure $99 Acute renal failure induced by rhabdomyolysis after strenuous, prolonged exercise such as marathon running or mountain climbing is a well-known medical phenomenon, but exercise-induced acute renal failure after short-term anaerobic exercise - for instance, short-distance track races - has been recognized only recently. This monograph provides in-depth information on exercise-induced acute renal failure after short-term anaerobic exercise, which causes severe pain in the loin and patchy renal ischemia with no sign of rhabdomyolysis. Half of the patients suffering from this condition experience renal hypouricemia, for which approximately 20% are treated with dialysis. This complete clinical reference book includes characteristics of the disease, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis, and corresponding preventive measures. Important information on gene analysis and etiology is also included, creating a valuable resource for nephrologists as well as for emergency physicians and those in the field of sports medicine. |

Diagnosis, Prevention and Treatment of Exercise-Related Asthma, Respiratory and Allergic Disorders in Sports $80 Asthma and allergy represent increasing problems for the actively competing athlete. The prevalence of exercise-induced asthma (EIA) has increased over the last two decades, especially amongst elite endurance athletes; it has been reported that high-level endurance training in particular may increase bronchial hyperresponsiveness (BHR) and cause inflammation in the airways. Intensive endurance training and competition, together with environmental influences, are thought to be causative factors. For winter sports, inhaled cold air represents such an environmental factor; moreover, exposure of competing swimmers to organic chlorine products released from indoor swimming pools is another example of a harsh environment. Furthermore, the increased amount of training and increased level of physical fitness and maximum oxygen uptake reached by present-day elite athletes may, in some cases, make it difficult to discriminate between limitations to maximum exercise set by normal airways and EIA. This underlines the need for developing good diagnostic criteria for EIA and BHR in relation to sports. |

Dietary Protein and Resistance Exercise $99.95 Dietary supplement companies and the food industry spend millions to reach resistance trainers--often with exaggerated marketing messages--while health practitioners continue to counsel athletes that their interest in protein is misguided and even dangerous. There appears to be a disconnect between scientists and almost everyone else in sports nutrition. With so much conflicting information, it's difficult to know who to believe. With contributions from the world's foremost experts, Dietary Protein and Resistance Exercise delivers the uncut scientific truth about the role of dietary protein in the well-being of athletes.Updating and clarifying the issues surrounding purposeful protein intake and resistance trainers, this volume: Reviews the science-related history of protein and its consumption among strength athletes Analyzes the mechanisms behind what proteins do in muscle cells Describes protein's effect on performance, recovery, and body composition Explores various populations that actively employ resistance training and dietary protein Discusses timing, type, and safety data regarding liberal protein diets and related supplements Includes sidebars, practical examples, and case studies--translating the science into a practical understanding of various protein-related topics Separating fact from fiction and providing the hard science behind the numbers, this volume demonstrates how changes in dietary protein intake may lead to measurable improvements in body composition, energy levels, and athletic performance. |
